What is inside?

Beneficial:
Activated carbon pellets (also known as activated charcoal) filter out all harmful chemicals, metals, mould and other unpleasant things that YOU don't want in your terrarium or houseplant soil.

One of the main advantages is the reduction of unpleasant odours, this applies to plants, terrariums and aquariums.
The benefits for plants
By adding activated charcoal to the soil, you protect the root system from potential pests and mould. Whilst it is not 100% protection, it does provide an additional safety barrier. It also creates a more granular & airy texture which prevents too much moisture in the soil.
The benefits for terrariums
In terrariums, we add activated carbon to both the soil mixture and the drainage layer. In this way, the water is pushed through the activated carbon with each cycle, maximising its effect. We have done many tests with identical terrariums where the only difference was the addition of activated carbon and the reduction in mould growth is incredible.
What makes coal "active"?"
The treatment of normal coal with high temperatures causes it to expand. This creates many tiny air pockets. These air pockets form the basis for the charcoal's adsorption potential and make it around 100 times more effective (more surface area) than normal charcoal.
